Pilates for Men
It is true that Pilates is very popular with women, but there is nothing about Pilates that makes it more for women than for men.
Fortunately, now that the Pilates method is becoming so well accepted in fitness, more men are showing up in my classes, which I am so happy to see!!! (there is a male in almost each of my classes, in one even 3!).
Pilates is an effective form of exercise because it develops your core strength and improves your posture and that is something that men can benefit from just as much as women and reduce their back problems. Those core muscles which Pilates targets so perfectly can help alleviate back problems and help develop a flat stomach. Two things that top the list of many a man's health and fitness wish list.
Pilates trains seven key physical performance factors including posture, balance, stability, flexibility, coordination, endurance and functional strength. Although strength training is crucial, stretching the muscles to build longer, more agile muscles is important as well - especially to functional daily activities.
For men over 50 years of age, prostate cancer is one of the most common diseases. It is believed that the atrophy (deterioration) of the pelvic floor muscles is a major factor. By practicing Pilates, the muscles can be effectively strengthened, and as a result, the risk of prostate cancer lessened. Pilates has also been shown to enhance sexual function.
For the stressed-out businessman, the relaxing nature of the sessions are very beneficial at the end of the day.
